September 12th, 2018 by

The 2017 Acura TLX is a great way to combine both performance and luxury for an unparalleled driving experience. When dealing with a luxury car like the TLX, you need to make sure you’re following certain rules to keeping them maintained well. Fuel choice is a big concern with the TLX and similar vehicles. Take a look to see if you should use premium fuel in the 2017 Acura TLX!

What kind of gas does Acura recommend for the 2017 TLX?

According to the owner’s manual for the 2017 Acura TLX, you should use unleaded premium gasoline that is 91 octane or higher. Additionally, Acura recommends that you fill up your TLX with top tier detergent gasoline when it’s available to you. Top tier detergent gasoline is gas that contains detergent additives that help fight against engine gunk, and can even greatly extend the life of your engine when used regularly.

Is it ok to use regular gas in an Acura TLX?

So premium gas at 91 octane is the recommended level by Acura, but is it ok to use something else in a pinch? The owner’s manual for the Acura TLX doesn’t say you can’t use a lower grade, such as regular gas at 87 octane – but it does warn that you should not use any gas that contains more than 15 percent ethanol, which would be harmful to your car. Acura also says that gas that contains methanol or MMT should not be used in the 2017 Acura TLX.

The downside of going with a lower octane gas, such as regular, is that you won’t see the same performance levels – which is one of the main reasons to be behind the wheel of a performance sedan. You might notice engine knocking if you go with a lower octane fuel, which could be damaging over time. If you do need to fill up with regular, we recommend taking things a little easier on the gas pedal and also going back to add premium fuel as soon as you’re able to.
